Welcome to the June Members’ Update.
The Eastern Africa Grain Council continues to promote structured trading systems across the Eastern and Southern Africa region. For instance during the month of June 2019 the Council facilitated over 454,000 MT trade deals worth over US Dollars 185 Million. Additionally, through the grain trade business hub model, EAGC facilitated the aggregation of grain commodities by Small Holder Farmers who traded 226.26MT of grains valued at USD 92, 300.
As you may be aware, EAGC has for a long time been at the forefront of representing the interests of the grain sector and non-state parties with an interest in agricultural commodity trade throughout the process of developing the Warehouse Receipt System legislation.
We are glad to report that in the month of June, after approximately 9 years of negotiations and consultations between different arms of Government and the private sector led by EAGC, His Excellency the President of Kenya Uhuru Kenyatta signed into law the Warehouse Receipt System Bill which will promote a structured grain trading Ecosystem in Kenya.
