The Eastern Africa Grain Council (EAGC) has made significant progress in the implementation of the Smart Market Project, which came into existence at the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. The Council partnered with Rockefeller Foundation from August 2020 to implement the Smart Markets Project, with the goal to increase access to safe, affordable and nutritious food; to address the challenge of food supply disruptions brought about by the pandemic, as well as the deplorable market designs that led to the widespread of Covid-19 within food markets.
One of the objectives of the project is to develop and pilot Smart Market concepts and designs that promote sustainable and resilient business models. As part of the implementation of the project, EAGC supported by Rockefeller Foundation, partnered with the County Government of Nakuru to construct the Naivasha Fish Smart Market in Naivasha. His Excellency Lee Kinyanjui, the Governor of Nakuru County commissioned the construction of the market in August 2021, and the construction of the market commenced in February, 2022.
