EAGC seeks to expand source markets to meet increasing grain market demand

EAGC held a high-level meeting with Ambassador Dr. John Stephen Simbachawene, High Commissioner and Head of Mission of the High Commission of the United Republic of Tanzania at the Tanzania High Commission in Kenyaon 13th July 2022, to explore grain trade opportunities between Kenya and Tanzania.

One of the potential trade opportunities explored was the trade partnership between the Cereal and Other Produce Board Of Tanzania (CPB) and Kenya National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) partnership for the sale of 200,000 MT of maize, following a heavy demand for maize in Kenya, where then traders and millers will purchase maize from the Cereals Board. The possibility of the partnership is still under consideration.

Another potential trade opportunity discussed is the supply of wheat to the Kenyan market through EAGC G Soko trading platform, given Tanzania’s ample supply of wheat. EAGC expressed the intent to seek technical support from the existing EAGC-CYMMT partnership.  Considerations are still underway.

The deliberations also led to the possibility of the introduction of school feeding programs in Tanzania through a Rockefeller school feeding project. The trade opportunity was identified due to an existing high appetite to supply maize flour to the Kenyan market (instead of the maize commodity itself) yet the flour export process is complex due to numerous requirements and a demanding trade strategy. In addition, it was noted that a shar of the Tanzanian market offers whole nutritious flour ideal for school feeding programs.
