EAGC has partnered with the National Cereals and Produce Board to build the capacity of stakeholders in the grain industry.
In a partnership discussion meeting between NCPB and EAGC held on 13th July, 2022 at NCPB headquarters in Nairobi, grain of poor quality was noted to be widely in circulation in the market despite the existence of grain standards that check grain quality.
The partnership identified a vast gap in the capcity of the industry to produce and handle grain in a manner that produces and maintains quality grain, from the farm to the consumer’s level.
To address this, the institutions resolved to partner to build the capacity of grain stakeholders through technical trainings to be developed through appropriate curriculums. The partnership will leverage on NCPB’s grain storage facilities that are well distributed across the country as excellent training centres; and EAGC’s Grain Business Institute’s curriculum and training modules that are accredited by the National Industrial Training Agency (NITA), and examinable by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).
The institutions will jointly strengthen their internal capacities to offer capacity building and thereafter develop training centres of excellence in Nairobi, the Coastal and Nakuru regions, with the first centre set for establishment in Nakuru at the NCPB Nakuru Grain silos.
Key stakeholders targeted for the training include farmers, cooperatives, grain warehouse operators, traders, commodity graders, government officials and financial institutions among others. Courses set to be offered include stock and storage facility management, inventory financial and collateral management, grain quality management, fumigation and pest control, warehouse operations and management among others.
The partnership will also establish an institutional framework to develop an advisory board to ensure the sustainability of the institutions to sustain quality grain in the ecosystem
